Merkland House is a beautiful old cottage perched above Merkland Wood, a rare treasure of ancient natural woodland surrounding the historical and architectural jewel in the crown of The Scottish National Trust, Brodick Castle and it's wonderful gardens. The cottage has breathtaking views high over the coast of Arran, the sea and to the mainland. Watch the ferries come and go from seat in the garden and at night light our garden beacon and sit round a blazing fire. The woods are full of trails taking you to nearby Brodick Castle or just wander endlessly where you will find all manner of wildlife, trees and plants. It is human and doggy heaven. You could see a Golden eagle as they are quite common on Arran or hear a woodpecker and at night your lights might pick up the silent swoop of our resident Barn Owl, catch bats flitting in the half light of evening or startle some of our resident wild red deer. One path takes you straight up Goat Fell and on to the spectacular ridges of Glen Rosa and Glen Sannox which are a walkers and climbers paradise. Another path takes you around the spectacular gorge walk which is a one hour round walk from the cottage. Arran is a haven for anyone interested in Geology and at the bottom of our track there are coastal walks through rare salt marshes and on to some of the beautiful rock formations which are some of the oldest rock known to man. Seals are often seen stretched out on the rocks. Brodick's best stretch of sandy beach is at Cladach which is a five minute drive from the cottage.

The main town with the ferry terminal is Brodick which is a ten minute drive. Close enough for shopping, restaurants and the sporting and leisure facilities of The Auchrannie Hotel but far enough away for you to take advantage of the quiet serenity afforded by the timeless majesty that Arran provides so generously.
