Dear Visitor,

Woodend Farm is a small pasture farm dating back to the 1700's.

Our farm is situated in a very beautiful location in the heart of the North York Moors National park. A very quiet No Through Road winds its way along the valley up to our farm gates and the only usual traffic is farmers, the postman and sheep quietly grazing the grass verges.

This area is a haven for walkers and serious hikers, many pass by our farmhouse on the Esk valley walk heading up to Esklets which is the source of the River Esk. Many other national trails are close by such as the Coast to Coast walk and the Cleveland Way.

The River Esk passes through our land and flows along adjacent to the cottage. Guests have commented on the pleasure of waking to the sound of the river through the bedroom window.

Westerdale valley is a patchwork of pasture and hayfields, rising up on each side to the heather covered moors which are an array of glorious purple in high summer!

A short drive from this idyllic setting there are lots of lovely places to visit:
Hutton le Hole (about 20 mins) is a picture postcard village with the Rydedale Folk Museum and the Crown Hotel for refreshments.
Danby has the North York Moors visitor centre, tea rooms, pub and lovely walks (take in the view from the ruined castle!)

Rosedale is one of the loveliest of valleys and is next to ours. Here you will find tearooms, little shops and a hotel serving food lunchtime and evenings.

The nearest village to Westerdale is Castleton with delicious food served at the Downe Arms and Eskdale Inn, a tearooms, Post Office and Co-op for essential supples. The Village shop is open daily for newspapers and a wide range of bakery and other products. You can catch a train here for a very scenic journey to Whitby or pretty stations in between including Grosmont where you can then catch the NYMoors steam railway to Pickering. There is ample parking at Castleton station (please close the gate to keep sheep off the line!).

Going further afield, drive across the moor to Kirkbymoorside and pick up a main road to Scarborough, Malton or York (August is the Ebor meeting at the races!)
Head east to the coast for Saltburn and Whitby and all the lovely seaside villages in between such as Sandsend. Heartbeat Country lies between us and Whitby - visit Goathland and see Aidensfield from Heartbeat (on the right day you may bump into some of the cast).

If you are staying in, there is a lovely, private, lawned garden overlooked only by sheep and cows where you can sit on the patio (its south facing and sunny). Indoors there is Sky Freesat tv, a dvd player and an old fashioned style jukebox cd player and radio. Or why not just enjoy the very hard to find peace and quiet!

Our palamino horse, Adam, likes an apple or carrot now and again if you fancy a stroll to his paddock.

Thanks for looking - we love it here and we hope you will too*****
