Locally
Beautiful shell-sand beaches, fresh-water and sea-water lochs, wild mountainside and spectacular sea cliffs are all found within just a few miles of The Guardhouse. The area is a haven for wildlife and to give a few examples, otters, red deer, golden eagles, snow buntings and a snowy owl, merlin and basking shark have all been observed by us on walks from the house. Others have been fortunate enough to spot a sea-eagle and corncrake nearby. We have watched a pod of whales - minke and two orcas - from Mangersta and come across an arctic hare whilst scaling Mealaisbhal.
There is a licensed, Community shop/post office, which also sells petrol, approximately 3 miles away. A mobile shop visits Aird weekly.

To Do
This is an ideal area for those who enjoy fishing (loch and seas), surfing, hiking or cycling. For the more adventurous, a trip around the inshore islands or an expedition to St Kilda can all be arranged locally.
There are Many sites of archaeological interest nearby, including the iron age fort at Bostagh and norse mill at Breaclete. The local Community Centre, where you can also get light lunches, houses a museum. For wining and dining there is an excellent restaurant within walking distance and two others within approx 4 - 8 miles.
