Hi - welcome to our site!  A little extra information may prove useful, so with this in mind, here goes:

We completed our first full year of self-catering in 2005, and have been kept busy ever since. We've been delighted to welcome visitors back for a fifth, sixth and even a seventh visit.

Our guests' comments have all been positive and encouraging, ranging from 'the cottage is a jewel - exquisite' to three-year-old Ailsa renaming it 'the shiny house'. We think that had something to do with the flagstone floor, or perhaps it could be the view from the windows of the sun shining on the sea!

For us, the Ayre is a labour of love - when we inherited and refurbished the cottage, we decided to make it as welcoming as possible, and thought of all the things we ourselves look for in self-catering accommodation - warmth, comfort, cleanliness, privacy and peaceful surroundings.

We want you to enjoy your stay in Orkney - it's a wonderful place and, although we can't guarantee the weather, we will do our best to make sure you have a great time at the Ayre. The house isn't large - it is, after all, a traditional crofter's cottage - but it sleeps four comfortably.

The grounds are spacious  - the Ayre sits in an acre of land - and the setting is special.  If it's a relaxing holiday you're after, then the Ayre will provide that. Simply watching the tide go in and out each day from the doorstep is enough to lower the blood pressure! The shore is just four metres from the garden gate, so why not wander down to the sea with a cup of coffee or glass of wine, and relax on the sea wall as the water laps at your feet?

If you're interested in renting the cottage, please email or call 07990651324, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Early booking and confirmation is advised, as the summer months especially are very popular and are often booked more than a year in advance.

We regret that, for practical reasons, during the months of May, June, July and August 2017 we are only able to accept bookings for periods of a fortnight or longer.

A non-refundable deposit (£100 per week booked) will secure the booking.

Cheques should be made payable to 'Chris Nicolson' and sent to:

There is an option to pay via digital banking, and details will be sent on our booking form.

The balance is due six weeks before the start of your holiday.

In the event of a cancellation within six weeks of your holiday beginning, if we are able to re-let the cottage we will be happy to refund the balance.

We would strongly advise guests to have holiday insurance.

If for any reason outwith our control the property becomes unavailable for a booking, all payments will be refunded. While the owners will do all they can to help the clients find alternative accommodation, no further liability will be accepted.

Guests agree to pay for any loss or damage caused during their stay, and to leave the cottage in a clean and tidy condition.

No additional guests shall be permitted to stay at the cottage without the agreement of the owners. The maximum number of guests at any time is four.

The changeover day is a Saturday and to allow us ample time to prepare the cottage between guests, arrivals should be no earlier than 4 p.m.

Please vacate the cottage by 10 a.m. on the day of departure. Where no guests are due in behind you - or have been in before you - we are happy to be flexible whenever possible.

We regret that we are unable to have pets at the cottage.

Please feel free to ask anything you'd like to know about the house, Orkney, or how to get there, and we'll do our best to help.

                   ~ Chris & Andy Nicolson
