Edinburgh can be a bracing city but with lots to do and less crowds it is a different city than the summer time.
As the apartment is on the Holyrood park it makes it a very good place to spend a few days and get fit by climbing to the top of the mountain daily - or running up it or cycling around it or a gentle amble along to the duck and swan pond only a few minutes away my children loved that when they were toddlers.
The area is so steeped in Scotlands history it is a really memorable area for those interested in history, architecture, politics and Royalty (the Queen is a neighbour when she is in Holyrood Palace).
The amble into Princess Street from the apartment is about 15 minutes and it is a lovely stroll around the park past Holyrood Palace and The Scottish Parliament up the Royal Mile to Saint Giles Cathedral, continue up to the top and you will come into Castle Esplanade before arriving at the Castle.
It is easy to drop down any of the steps into Princess Street gardens. The gardens have lots happening before Christams - skating outdoors, and lots of market stalls . From there cross Princess Street and find all sort of shops
