This traditional stone built cottage is renovated to a very high standard offering a homely base for your island stay. Situated on the Shapinsay shoreline nestling in the quiet conservation village of Balfour. The front gardens here meet the shores of Elwick Bay which is a very popular meeting place for seals. Literally two minutes walk to the pier from where the small friendly city of Kirkwall, with St Magnus Cathedral, is just a 25 minute ferry trip away.
  • Island shop and post office, restaurants, heritage centre and ferry terminal are all within short walking distance.
  • Shapinsay is a beautiful, low-lying agricultural island ideal for walking or cycling.
  • Translucent skies over striking sea and landscapes provide plenty to whet the palette of the discerning artist.
  • Just relax with nature on the shore while bird/seal watching.
  • RSPBReserve nearby.
  • Ideally situated for visiting Kirkwall and the Mainland whilst experiencing island life.

If you are new to Orkney some directions may be needed to help with your journey. Hope this is of some help. Whichever way you choose to travel you will arrive on the Mainland of Orkney either by Ferry or by Air and then on to Shapinsay.

For sea travel to Orkney Mainland please check the following:
Northlink Ferries, Tel: 01856 885 500
Pentland Ferries, Tel: 01856 831226
John o' Groats Ferries, Tel: 01955 611353

You then need to go to kirkwall where the Shapinsay ferry terminal is easy to find. The island of Shapinsay is reached by a 25min ferry trip from here aboard MV Shapinsay. See owners website for more details. Orkney ferries Tel: 01856 872044.

For Air travel information either contact Flybe or ask your travel agent.
Your arrival airport is Kirkwall. From here you are just a few minutes from the Shapinsay ferry terminal. I would advise pre-booking your taxi or take the airport shuttle bus (departs every 30 mins) which takes you into Kirkwall dropping you near to the Shapinsay ferry by request.
