This charming and cosy 300 year old limestone cottage is quietly situated, with others of its age, just off the village green in the beautiful unspoilt medieval village of Castleton, located in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The cottage nestles below the castle and from the very private cottage garden there are spectacular views.
Accommodation Originally a bakery, Oatcake Cottage with its exposed beams and trusses sleeps four, with one double bedroom and one twin bedroom and there is a bathroom with shower over. Beamed lounge with original gritstone fire-place and 'coal effect' stove, with TV/DVD/Video/CD. Off the lounge is the dining room with pay-phone and the country kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine/dryer and a traditional Belfast sink. Centrally heated throughout - controlled by guests. No smoking.
Outside - Oatcake has a steeply terraced garden, with seating on each tier and with stunning views.
Locally there is excellent walking from the front door, climbing, caving, hang-gliding and cycling, horse-riding in Edale, swimming in Buxton or Hathersage heated open air pool, a Victorian lido, or you can potter around Castleton with its church, castle, 4 caves, excellent pubs for eating, restaurants and tea shops. Local cycle hire. Or walk over to Edale's new country tea shops. For dining on special occasions try the Losehill House Hotel in Hope or the region's first organic restaurant in Hathersage.
Castleton is simply the best base for exploring the Peak District, Chatsworth 30 mins, Buxton 20 mins. Manchester Airport 50 mins. Sheffield 25 mins. Hassop Hall, Haddon Hall and Eyem - the Plague Village - all a short distance to drive.
