 The cottage retains all the charm of the original forestry workers abode while having the benefit of modern fittings and equipment. The elevated site gives views over the village to the forest and hills beyond. - The nearby Visitors Centre has way-marked walks and part of the Southern Upland Trail long distance walk passes here.
- Nearby is Bruce's Stone and the start of the trail to the summit of Southern Scotland's highest peak, Merrick at 850 metres.
- As well as the marked National cycle routes there is also a newly opened section of the C7-Stanes? cycle route in the forest.
- The R.S.P.B has a site a short drive away where there is also an otter viewing area.
- All the local historical sites and gardens are within easy reach and the ferry at Stranraer enables day trips to Belfast and Northern Ireland.
- Newton Stewart is a good centre for shopping and has a cinema showing the latest films. The Merrick sports centre in the town has an indoor pool and all the modern fitness equipment.
- There is a frequent bus service connecting the village with Newton Stewart and Girvan.
