Comfortable and warm holiday retreat, great open fire - thanks Sue and Richard for a lovely house. Eating out - Fox Hall fish 'n' chips. Mainsgill fram shop cafe, Bay Tree at Ravensworth, White Swan at Gilling West. Picnics at Low Green and other reservoirs, Hamsterley Forest organised parking areas and £5 for drive on Bank Holiday. Upper Swaledale lovely. Drives - all roads over moors and in dales give fabulous views and worth doing in both directions. Lots to explore in this beautiful countryside, suits walkers and non-walkers.

We have had a lovely stay, thank you. Cottage very clean, well equipeed and lovely location. Our first time to the Dales and it certainly won't be our last. It is well worth travelling all over - the views are spectacular - we even braved it to Tan Hill. Loved Aysgarth Falls and the town of Hawes. We covered most of Wensleydale and Swaledale and wasn't disappointed with any of it. Richard was/is a lovely local town and well worth exploring, felt slightly disappointed with Barnard Castle but Bowes Museum definitely worth visiting especially if you have a wet day. Our weather mixed - beautiful sunshine to wind and rain but no different than expected.
We loved the cottage and open fire which was used on our damp evenings.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our week at Hilltop. Had a very relaxed and chilled out time. The cottage has been very comfortable and perfect for our requirements.
Had a good Sunday lunch at the Shoulder of Mutton, Kirby Hill and an excellent birthday meal at the Hack and Spade, Whaston, not cheap but worth it (only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday).
Kiplin Hall is worth a visit, nice stately home and gardens. This is our second visit and we won't wait leave it as long until the next, shame to be going home, really love it here. Thanks for everything.

This is our second visit to Hilltop, with a 6 year gap, it was good to be back. We have enjoyed the peace and quiet. Watching birds and rabbits has been a real treat for city dwellers.
We have enjoyed a visit to Kiplin Hall. The staff were excellent and the lunch was good.
The weather has been good, and that is always a blessing.
We hope to return and rather sooner than later.

Enjoyed exploring the Dales, trip to Thirsk to see The James Herriot experience is well worth a visit. Visit Tan Hill - highest Pub in England and on a lovely day the views are amazing. Barnard Castle is the best place for supermarket - Morrisons situated in the town. Fox Hall Inn for food was very good and also Motel at Smallways. "Our beautiful cottage" - well it seems like it (17th consecutive year!). We've said many times before how we love the peace and tranquility here - but needed it more so this time after a "bit of a year". The cottage is so lovely and we appreciate everyone looking after it. Thank you sue and richard - see you next year.

We have really enjoyed our time here, thank you. With a mix of relaxing, sightseeing and hunting for family roots we have had a very interesting visit. Hilltop Cottage has been a haven. Bowes and Beamish museums are a must-see. Still not cool enough for the fire unfortunately.

Hilltop Cottage is beautiful both inside and out.
There is a wonderful peaceful atmosphere all around. Just what we needed at this time in our life. Sadly we are unable to enjoy the wonderful walks due to my husband’s illness but the visual beauty is stunning. The cottage is immaculate and the hospitality is excellent.
Thank you for your kindness and welcoming us into this special place, a gem of tranquillity!

We have had a very cosy and comfortable stay at Hilltop Cottage. Quite cold to begin with but as the week progressed it got hotter. A most enjoyable week visiting places we visited with our three children over twenty years ago, plus others. Anyone wanting a snack lunch visit “Nest” in Barnard Castle.
Many thanks for the use of your cottage.

Such a pleasant comfortable stay in Hilltop Cottage which has so obviously been decorated and furnished with a lot of love. With pretty awful weather outside we’ve been very cosy indoors.
Lots of historical sites around, we’ve loved the Castles and Abbeys – Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley, Richmond and Middleham Castles all worth a visit and Barnard Castle town, a charming little shopping area.
We’ll be taking rainy but happy memories of Yorkshire back home to Cape Town, S. Africa
Many thanks Sheila and Peter

What a delightful cottage! Certainly deserving of its rating. Our week had mixed weather but we got out and about every day. The country ride was beautiful. Some of the things we enjoyed: Fountains Abbey, Wensleydale Railway, Aysgarth Falls, Raby Castle and the pub in Ravensworth which must qualify for the best (size included) fish and chips in Yorkshire, perhaps even Britain!

Back here to our “home from home” again. As always the cottage is immaculate and for us is a 5star not 4star rating. I think this is the worst week of weather we have ever had (but then there’s been no summer!) – but it doesn’t matter as we can just perfectly chill out.
Many thanks, as always Sue and Richard

Had a very enjoyable week. Echo everything that has been said about the cottage with the addition about the smashing towels (nice and big). If it should rain! a great day out The Bowes Museum. Worth a visit to Flatts Woods in Barnard Castle, then after your walk call in for a bite to eat at the Nest café.

This is our first experience of "Hill Top Cottage" and we're so glad we found it on the website and that you'd had a cancellation! It is such a tranquill place, so comfortable and welcoming - lovely to come back to after a day out (specially when overcome by a rain-storm on the moors!. We have enjoyed our stay here and in the village - such friendly people in Dalton. In fact, when we were on our way home via Leeds, at the weekend, we just couldn't go, so turned round and came back - (expect you've heard of these strange folk who drive the wrong way up/down a motorway!). Its a real tonic to stay here.
Thank you Richard and Sue for this lovely place; for all the maps/books/DVDs/info. We've loved the surrounding countryside - some good walks, beautiful scenery, castles, art/craft shops/galleries, tea-rooms and delicious local ice-cream!
And "Hill Top" is so well-equipped. Thank you for all the attention to detail to make us so comfy. We loved all the bird/wildlife - its a stunning area.

A warm welcome to a lovely comfortable cottage, weather dry and sunny everyday. Visitied all the places we had on our list, Kiplin Hall well worth a visit. The Farm Shop serves very good food and lots to take away, a bit of a shock to see a camel! but all very interesting.

Beautiful cottage. Very comforable and warm, in stunning countryside. Although unable to do any of the walks, we have visited all the places we wished to see and make Middleham Castle well worth a visit, and had a lovely day at Barnard Castle. A very relaxing and peaceful break.
Thank you Sue and Richard

What a delightful cottage – so peaceful and comfortable. The ideal place to do some writing. I will feature the cottage in several short stories. I have been to many cottages but this one provides the right atmosphere for writing. Thanks for the hospitality. I will certainly be back.

Can understand why so many people come back. The cottage provided a peaceful haven in which to relax and re-charge our batteries. A fantastic location, beautiful scenery and lots of interesting places to visit – Barnard Castle, High Force, Raby Castle, Richmond. We would love to come back. Many thanks.

Arrived in glorious sunshine. Through lovely countryside. Lovely cottage well equipped. Visited Barnard Castle, then into Teesdale to High Force and Low Force waterfalls. Nature at its best. Cooler Tuesday but still sunny. Explored Richmond and surrounding area. All in all a lovely few days in peaceful surroundings.

What a cottage!! What a Christmas!! Absolutely perfect, a great getaway. This cottage had everything we needed and a lot more. I'm sure we will be back. Very central to lots of places, yet lots of lovely walks locally.
We would highly recommend the Oak Tree Inn at Hutton Magna, absolutely fantastic meal, with the service to match.
Sue was very welcoming, very helpful before and during our stay. Endless supplys of wood and coal for the very warming open fire, we can't wait to get back to it another year.
