High House is a 300-year-old country home nestled on an escarpment overlooking the Eskdale Valley. High House has a secluded garden with adjoining private 8-acre wood, which leads down to the River Irt that flows from Waswater Lake to the sea at Ravenglass once an ancient Roman port.
Accommodation The beamed Attic suite which is on the second floor has its own access and comprises a double bedroom, spacious ensuite and retreat room. The dormer windows have uninterrupted views of the Eskdale Valley and Fells beyond. On the first floor there are two bedrooms, a spacious king-size bedroom with large full bathroom and a double room with spacious private facilities including shower, toilet, and basin. The original sandstone stairs leading to the first floor are worn with the passage of time and the generations that have lived in the home for 300 years. The separate formal dining room with log burning stove accommodates 6 persons comfortably. There is a downstairs cloakroom. The lounge comfortably seats 6 persons; the room has a beamed ceiling, TV, DVD player and log burning stove. The lounge looks out into the secluded garden. Adjoining the lounge is a reception-room with french windows that open out to the back decking. The large family kitchen is slit-levelled and well equipped containing a breakfast table, wood burning stove and sofa. Location - The property sits on the edge of the delightful village of Holmrook and within the Lake District with rolling rural farming countryside just inland from West Cumbria coast. The house boasts of panoramic views of Harter Fell and the surrounding Fells at the head of Eskdale Valley.
- We have many wild birds visiting the garden and red squirrels can be seen feasting on nuts placed in a feeder positioned on the Yew tree outside the kitchen. In autumn and during the winter months, wild deer can be seen grazing in the fields below High House.
Outside The property has several decking areas, our favourite being the 'Gin and Tonic' deck. All the decks overlook panoramic views, and on warm days all meals can be taken on the decks. We like to offer guests the use of our private wood and riverbank, but we need to point out that both the wood and river can be dangerous and all caution must be exercised. You need to be responsible for your safety and the safety of others. Please Note - We welcome children but they have to be supervised at all times for their care and safety by the adults in the party. We like to offer guests the use of our private wood and riverbank, but we need to point out that both the wood and river can be dangerous, enter at your own risk. You need to be responsible for your safety and the safety of others.
- The property and home could be difficult for people with mobility difficulties. All bedrooms are on the first and second floor, and the outside decking areas are on different levels.
- We are unable to accommodate your pets as we have animals of our own and we wish to safeguard the abundance of wild life that visit the property.
High House is a relaxing and private hideaway; it is a great base for exploring the many beautiful walks in a quieter area of the Lake District.
