About the Location:
  • Aspect: Ar Neamh Beag is situated on an elevated position overlooking Bantry Bay on the North side of the Sheep's head peninsula which is situate between the Mizen head to the south and the Beara peninsula to the north. On the other side of the bay opposite the house, a lighthouse at Roancarrigmore can be observed flashing every night. This is located near Adrigole on the road into Castletownbere.
  • Views: Castletownbere itself sits ensconced neatly behind Bare island which is the island/ landmass to the left as you gaze across the bay from Ar Neamh Beag. The distance across Bantry bay is circa 7.2km (4.5m).
  • Mountain: Apart from fronting onto the sea, Ar Neamh Beag is also nestled at the foot of a small mountain called Seefin-mountain, which measures 345 meters above sea level.
  • Scenery: This area of West Cork is one of the most beautiful areas in Ireland with notable wildlife and animals, which are sadly no longer seen or heard in other parts of the country. The Skylark and Cuckoo are but two of the many birds which frequent the area.
  • Sea Fishing: There are numerous points for sea-fishing on Sheeps Head, the nearest being Gortnakilla pier which is within a mile of the house.
  • Restaurants: Bantry, Ballylickey, Durrus.
  • Hill Walking & Cycling: The Sheep's Head peninsula, the Beara peninsula, South West Donegal and Wicklow are among the best walking areas in Ireland. The Sheep's Head Way is a walking route that has been developed over the years with different routes marked out across the hills and mountains of sheep's head and which culminates with a lighthouse at the tip of Sheep's Head. The Sheep's Head Way was in fact awarded the European Destination of Excellence in 2009. Note O.S. Discovery series map 88.
  • Boat Trips: For those interested in boating, boat trips are available to a number of places including Whiddy Island where the boats depart from the pier in Bantry, Bear Island where the boats depart from Castletownbere. One of Ireland's largest off shore islands is Cape Clear and this can be accessed from boats departing the small town of Skull. Also available in Skull, are boat trips around the famous Fastnet rock/lighthouse around which the biannual Yaught race sails. For those interested in sailing, Adrigole on the Beara peninsula offers a sailing school.
  • Swimming: Kilcrohane c.3.5 miles away offers a small pebble beach. For those requiring a large sandy beach, Barleycove beach on the Mizen Head is recommended for a day trip. When there, take the opportunity to visit Mizen Head; the most southerly point in Ireland. The Fastnet Rock is visible on clear days.
The Sheep's Head Peninsula
Sheep's Head/ Muntervary: this is at the very tip of the Sheep's head peninsula (next stop America). From Ár Neamh Beag, simply drive west across the mountain to Kilcrohane, wherein you take a right turn. Follow the windy but very scenic road until you end up in a car park overlooking the sea. Park here, but bare in mind it can occasionally be windy. There is a gorgeous walk out to the Sheep's head from the car park across reasonably level terrain. The walk is circa 4km (2.5m) long. A light house and a helli-pad sits at the end of the peninsula.

Air India Memorial Gardens:
Following the Air India disaster in 1985 in which a Boeing 747 exploded in mid air off the Irish coast killing all passengers and crew on board, a commemorative garden was constructed to commemorate the victims of this tragedy/ terrorist attack. This is located in Ahakista, which (as the crow flies) is on the other side of the mountain from Ár Neamh Beag. Travel to Kilcrohane, and turn left at the T junction travelling east. Ahakista is circa 5.5km (3.5 miles) further on. The commemorative garden is on the right hand side of the road overlooking the sea.

Goats path/ sheep's head walking and cycling route:
The sheep's head is one of Ireland's premier walking and cycling routes. It is recommended that you procure an ordinance survey map; Discovery series 88.

Bantry:
Is host to a number of restaurants. Wolf Tone the famous Irish patriot landed here with a contingent of French warships in 1796/8 and a stature stands to his memory in 'Wolf Tone square'.
