Fairview is a charming, very quiet, Grade II listed cottage in the heart of this market town on the edge of the Cotswolds. The cottage dating from the late 15th century lies behind the 12th century abbey and has commanding, uninterrupted views over the river Avon.
The accommodation is on three floors: The lounge/dining room with exposed beams and walls, teak flooring and open fire, is on the ground floor as is the fully equipped kitchen. The principal bedroom is on the first floor next to a separate bathroom with bath and power-shower. The top floor with revealed gable beams is both the study and television room and has a divan for a third person (guest or child). The cottage has gas-fired central heating and all rooms have views over the countryside. Outside The cottage has a two-tiered garden, with a patio outside the kitchen window and steps descending to an equally secluded small garden. Both enjoy elevated, south facing views over open countryside and have iron-wrought tables and chairs.
The Town Today's town, which is surrounded by rivers on three sides offering enchanting riverside walks, dates from the arrival of a monk, Maelduf in 642, who established a hermitage, said by some to be set within our complex of buildings. In 880 King Alfred granted the town a charter leading it to claim to be the oldest borough in England. The present Abbey was consecrated in 1180 and became the foremost religious centre after Canterbury and Winchester. With the dissolution of monasteries, the abbey became the parish church, which today is also used for concerts. In a word, Malmesbury and our cottage are steeped in history.
