High in the North Pennines midway between Allendale and Allenheads, this 18th century stone cottage nestling on the banks of Swinhope burn, is approached along 800 metres of private road. A variety of free-range chickens add to the wild bird life which provides an additional ambience to this idyllically tranquil rural setting with its panoramic views of the East Allen valley.
In addition to the standard accommodation and enchanting views, the cottage offers a fully tuned piano for your musical enjoyment, as well as a pair of complimentary mountain bikes for casual perambulation around the hills and dales of this region, and a prime quality individual quoits pitch for leisure activity during long enchanted evenings.
Accommodation: Elpha Green Cottage sleeps 5 in three separate bedrooms (2 single beds; 1 single bed; 1 double bed). A cot is available upon request. All bed linen and towels are included in the price. Full central heating is included, naturally. The living room incorporates a stone fireplace, upright piano, three piece contemporary suite, rocking chair, colour television, video and CD player, with immediate access to the sunporch and its panoramic views across the valley. The new contemporary farmhouse-style kitchen features a gas hob and cooker, dishwasher and washing machine, fridge and freezer, microwave oven, toaster, electric kettle, and a six-place sit-down table with highchair. The bathroom features a large porcelain bath, and new walk-in power shower, as well as shaving point and additional fan heater. Location: - The surrounding area was in the 19th century the most important lead mining centre in Europe, the mines around Allenheads alone yielding one seventh of the total lead produced in Britain.
- This area is now known as 'England's Last Wilderness' and has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a paradise for walkers, birdwatchers, industrial archaeologists or those just interested in 'the great outdoors'.
- Traces of the area's past can be discovered in Heritage Centres at nearby Allenheads and Nenthead, as well as at Killhope Wheel just across the moor.
- Weardale and Teasdale are just a short drive, the Lake District can be reached in 45 minutes and Hadrian's Wall in 25 minutes.
- The C2C cycle way passes within 2 miles and there are footpaths close to the cottage.
- Public bus route through Sparty Lea to Allendale and Hexham, which is 17 miles away.
