CHANDLER COTTAGE is a spacious 3 bedroom character type, sought after Devonshire cottage with courtyard garden. It is decorated to a high standard and with all the conveniences you might expect at home. There are panoramic views of the Exe river and distant hills from the cottage.

The Exe Estuary and Starcross The beautiful Exe Estuary is internationally known as one of Europe's most important havens for migrating birds as they journey between the Arctic and Africa. Many species of migrating and British birds can be spotted from the comfort of your cottage windows as the tide ebbs and flows. The estuary is protected as an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is a nature reserve only four miles away with sand dunes and bathing beaches, a perfect picnic outing for the whole family. The land by the Exe River is a walker's paradise, along towpaths, past a deer-park and farms and over lock gates for a pasty and cider at an island pub! It has easy access to riverside paths and stiles. The river walk can be tackled with easy stages during a week's stay, or the 24 miles from Exmouth to Dawlish Warren, crossing on the Topsham Ferry to Turf Lock Hotel and the island, can be accomplished in one day by keen walkers. The whole estuary as far as Orcombe Point is a beachcomber's paradise. Starcross got its name from the Ferry. There was definitely a ferry operating in the 12th Century owned by the Abbots of Sherbourne. They put a cross at the top of the steps (stairs) leading from the end and the village that grew there became known as Starcross. Starcross is also closely associated with nearby Cockwood Village, the harbour and stories of smugglers using the sands of Dawlish Warren to hide from customs and Excise officers. Today the Starcross pier (600 yards away) will help you board the ferry to Exmouth or a riverboat trip. Deep Sea Fishing can be arranged from Exmouth. The Great Western Railway: The Great Western Railway built by Brunel, passes through Starcross and here he built a pumping station for his famous Atmospheric Railway - now Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club. It is known as the Brunnel Tower and together with Powderham Castle they dominate the Exe estuary.
Accommodation: 2 double bedrooms. 1 single bedroom. 1 en suite. 2 bathrooms. 3 toilets. Large lounge. Large kitchen/diner. 1 utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. Free car parking for one car. Keys: The cottage keys are normally issued on arrival.
Laundry Room: The laundry room is free.
Religious Services: There are pretty C/E churches in Starcross and at Kenton a mile away. The nearest Roman Catholic church is in Dawlish (3 miles). Also in Dawlish are Methodist, United Reformed, Spiritualist and other churches and places of worship. There is a magnificent cathedral at Exeter.
Shopping: Dawlish offers typical and very adequate "small town" shopping. Exeter about 6 miles away offers superb shopping centres. At Dawlish Warren, one can find a wide range of gifts, clothing and beachwear during the summer months.
Fishing and Boating: There is a small slip way in Starcross and a small harbour at Cockwood (1/2 mile) where guests may conveniently launch their own small craft. Fishing trips and "around the bay" type trips can be made at Dawlish and Exmouth.
Theatre: Dawlish boasts its own small Shaftesbury theatre where local amateur companies regularly present a wide variety of entertainments. Internationally famous artists appear at the Paignton Festival theatre, Torquay's Princess theatre and Plymouth Theatre Royal. Exeter offers the Northcott and Barnfield theatres and Teignmouth presents summer revue at the Carlton Theatre.
Tourist Attractions: The South West of England offers an absolute abundance of tourist attractions both natural and man-made covering every possible interest. We have a stock of leaflets on countless of these tourist attractions, and maps to help you plan your days.
Transport: The railway line between Starcross and Newton Abbot offers wonderful views of the Exe Estuary. It runs along the sea wall from Dawlish Warren to Teignmouth (going through five tunnels through the red cliffs on the way) and finally along the bank of the Teign Estuary into Newton Abbot. A particulary pcturesque trip and a must for railway buffs! There are also two steam train tracks with pretty runs. One links Paignton and Dartmouth - the other runs from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.
