Location
The smallest ferry in the UK makes the journey between Cromarty and Nigg where there is a bird hide for viewing the many birds in Nigg Bay. The entrance to the Cromarty Firth is guarded by the hills known as the Sutors - legend has it that these were formed by giants throwing rocks at each other across the water, thereby bringing the shores so close to each other at this point. Despite their proximity, the depth of water allows large ships to pass through to the firth.
Dolphins, too, may be seen here and boat trips from Cromarty harbour will allow you a closer view. The best place to see dolphins from the shore is at Chanonry Point at nearby Fortrose, where the land juts out into the firth and nearly touches a promontory jutting from the south shore, so squeezing the dolphins into the narrow passage. The best time to see them is with the incoming tide as they follow the fish into the estuary of the river Ness at Inverness. There is a wealth of history and many interesting buildings in the village - Hugh Miller, the geologist and writer, lived here and his cottage is open to view. A pottery and craft shop, antique shops, a choice of eating places bakery and post office/general store, Cromarty provides all you need, although a trip to the Highland Capital, Inverness is only 40 minutes by car. With leisurely walks or bike rides along the coast it makes this an ideal seaside holiday destination. Other local seaside villages are Rosemarkie and Fortrose, both picturesque and welcoming. For golfers there is Fortrose golf course just 15 minutes drive and many more great golf courses within an hours drive of the accommodation.
